A Democratic congressman is under fire after posting a violent video depicting rape on Instagram.
The video, posted on Wednesday, was accompanied by an offensive caption reading “Hey girls, be quick to get laid.”
The Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pennsylvania) quickly deleted the video. But in the hours that followed, the Democrat, who represents the first district of central Pennsylvania, met with party leaders for a meeting on Saturday.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) confirmed to NBC News that they had requested the congressional hearing.
“We called for a meeting after seeing this offensive video. It’s disturbing to see how any elected official could glorify rape and sexual assault,” the DCCC said in a statement.
Now, the House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) is writing a letter to the chairmen of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees calling for a hearing on Gosar for posting “inflammatory rhetoric that endangers the lives of women.”
At a news conference on Saturday, DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos (D-Illinois) reminded reporters of the broad support she received from Democrats and Republicans alike on her opposition to Gosar’s legislation to prevent so-called sanctuary cities.
“The ability of elected officials to incite anger and vitriol and destroy lives is not what we stand for,” she said, adding “There is no place in the Congress for this.”
